PILGRIMAGES

The Museum houses the first temple built in honour of St John of the Cross in the whole world. It was here that he died, and was buried.

In the oratory’s choir there was his cell —the poorest and narrowest in the monastery. And it was there that he went “to sing matins to heaven” at midnight on 13th December 1591. The relics that stayed in Úbeda, after the body of the saint was moved to Segovia, are venerated here. His wishing “tear through the veil of this sweet encounter” in his verse came true in this place.

For years the Carmelite community has welcomed every person or group that pilgrim to Úbeda in order to venerate the relic, pray or celebrate the Eucharist. For those groups interested, a guided tour by a religious man if offered under reservation.

THE WAYS OF ST JOHN OF THE CROSS

A big part of the places and ways related to the saint is in Andalusia, above all in Jaén. Úbeda is greatly important, for the Museum houses the place where Fray John died and was buried, and also conserves several major relics for their veneration. Our community also offers the possibility of going through these places with a religious man who will introduce you in situ to the life and work of the mystic saint.
